As the nation's premier laboratory for renewable energy research, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is developing new energy technologies to benefit both the environment and the economy. Since 1977, MRI has managed and operated the national laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy. NREL's research covers the spectrum of renewable energy and energy efficiency including solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, hydrogen and fuel cells, buildings, advanced vehicles and fuels, electric infrastructure, energy analysis, and basic sciences. Many of NREL's research achievements have been ranked among the nation's most significant technical innovations by R&D Magazine, Discover, and Popular Science. NREL is home to three centers of excellence: the National Center for Photovoltaics, the National Bioenergy Center, and the National Wind Technology Center.
